Some smart home devices (such as smart plugs, light bulbs, cameras, thermostats, and appliances) can only connect to a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network during setup. Since eero combines the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands into a single network name, these devices may occasionally have trouble connecting.

Fortunately, eero allows you to temporarily pause the 5 GHz (and 6 GHz, if applicable) band, forcing your network to broadcast only on 2.4 GHz for a short period. This can help complete the setup process for compatible devices.

How to Temporarily Pause the 5 GHz Band

  1. Open the eero app on your mobile device.
  2. Tap Settings in the bottom-right corner.
  3. Select Troubleshooting.
  4. Tap My device won't connect.
  5. Select My device is 2.4 GHz only.
  6. Tap Temporarily pause 5 GHz (or Temporarily pause 5 and 6 GHz on newer systems).

Your eero network will now broadcast only the 2.4 GHz band for approximately 10 minutes, giving you time to connect your smart device.

After Setup

Once your device is connected:

  • The 5 GHz and 6 GHz bands will automatically resume after the temporary pause period.
  • Your newly connected device should remain connected and continue operating normally.
  • No additional changes are required.

Important Notes

  • eero does not allow you to permanently separate or rename the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks. Both bands share the same Wi-Fi name (SSID) by design.
  • This feature is intended primarily for the initial setup of devices that only support 2.4 GHz.
  • If your device still won't connect, try moving closer to your main eero, restarting the device, or contacting Marshmallow Support for assistance.
