Connecting to a Sonos System
If you just downloaded the Sonos app, got a new phone, or have guests over who want to play DJ, connecting to your existing home system is incredibly simple.
- Ensure your smartphone or tablet is connected to your home's main Wi-Fi network (not a guest network).
- Open the Sonos app.
- The app will automatically search for nearby speakers. When it finds your network, tap Join existing system.
- Follow the brief on-screen prompts to finish connecting.
Adding Music Services
Sonos supports dozens of streaming platforms, including Spotify, Apple Music, Pandora, and Amazon Music. You need to link your accounts to the Sonos app to browse and play your playlists.
- Open the Sonos app.
- Navigate to Settings (gear icon) > Services & Voice > Add a Service.
- Scroll through the list or use the search bar to find your preferred music provider.
- Tap Add to Sonos and follow the on-screen instructions to log in to your account.
Selecting Rooms to Play Music
If you have multiple Sonos speakers throughout your house, you need to tell the app which room you want to control before you hit play.
- In the Sonos app, swipe up from the "Now Playing" bar at the very bottom of the screen to open the System view.
- You will see a list of all your available rooms (e.g., Living Room, Kitchen, Patio).
- Tap the specific room you want to listen in.
- Once selected, any music you search for or select will play in that specific room.
Playback Controls
Once your music is playing, the "Now Playing" screen gives you full control.
- Tap the Play/Pause button in the center to stop or resume the music.
- Tap the Next Track (right arrow) or Previous Track (left arrow) to skip around.
- Tap the Shuffle (crossed arrows) or Repeat (circling arrows) icons to mix up your listening experience.
Volume Controls
You can control the volume using the slider at the bottom of the "Now Playing" screen, or by using the physical volume buttons on the side of your smartphone while the app is open.
Note: If you are playing music across multiple rooms at once, adjusting the main slider will turn the entire house up or down. To adjust a single room's volume, tap the volume slider once to reveal the individual room sliders.
Switching Inputs (TV and Line-In)
If you have a Sonos soundbar (like the Arc or Beam) connected to your TV, or a Sonos Amp connected to a turntable or other device, you may occasionally need to manually switch the audio source from "Music" back to "TV" or "Line-In."
- Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to open the System view and select the room with your TV or Amp.
- Tap the music source icon (it will look like a music note, or the logo of the service currently playing).
- Scroll down to the "Line-In" or "TV" section and select TV or Line-In. The audio from your external device will instantly start playing.
Pro Tip: To make this happen automatically whenever you turn on your TV, navigate to Settings > System > [Select your Room] > TV Autoplay and toggle it on.
Grouping Rooms (Playing Music Everywhere)
One of the best features of Sonos is the ability to group multiple speakers together so they play the exact same audio perfectly in sync.
- Open the System view by swiping up from the bottom of the screen.
- Find the room currently playing the music you want to share.
- Tap the Group icon (a square with a triangle inside) next to the volume slider for that room.
- Check the boxes next to the other rooms you want to join the party, then tap Apply.
Trueplay Tuning
If you use an Apple iPhone or iPad, you can use the microphone on your device to analyze the acoustics of your room and custom-tune your Sonos speakers for the best possible sound.
- Navigate to Settings > System.
- Select the specific room you want to tune.
- Tap Trueplay > Trueplay Tuning and follow the on-screen instructions. You will be prompted to walk around your room slowly waving your device up and down while the speaker plays a series of test tones.
