If your TV suddenly started reading menus, buttons, or actions aloud
Apple TV
If your TV suddenly starts speaking menu items, volume changes, app names, or navigation out loud, the most common cause is that VoiceOver was turned on accidentally.
VoiceOver is an accessibility feature built into Apple TV that reads what is happening on screen.
It can sound like:
- menu options being spoken
- app names being announced
- volume changes read aloud
- button movements narrated as you click
💡 This does not mean the TV, remote, or Apple TV is broken.
In almost all cases, it is simply a setting that was activated by mistake.
Quick Fix
Using your Apple TV remote:
- Press the Back / Menu button three times quickly
- This usually turns VoiceOver off immediately.
- After doing this, the voice should stop right away.
If the quick fix does not work
Use the remote to navigate to:
Settings > Accessibility > VoiceOver
Then set:
VoiceOver = Off
What if the voice makes navigation difficult?
When VoiceOver is active, menu movement behaves differently because Apple TV expects accessibility navigation.
Move slowly through menus and listen carefully to what is being selected.
If needed:
- click once to highlight
- click again to confirm
This helps avoid selecting the wrong item while VoiceOver is active.
Why this happens
The most common cause is accidental button pressing on the remote.
This often happens when:
- the remote is handled quickly
- buttons are pressed multiple times without noticing
- the remote is picked up upside down
- someone unfamiliar with the remote is using it
💡 It is one of the most common accidental Apple TV setting changes we see.
If the TV is also announcing volume changes
You may hear things like:
- “Volume 20”
- “Volume 25”
This is still VoiceOver.
Once VoiceOver is turned off, those announcements stop as well.
If VoiceOver turns back on again later
Sometimes the triple-click shortcut remains active.
To prevent accidental reactivation:
Go to:
Settings > Accessibility > Accessibility Shortcut
There you can adjust what triple-click controls.
Still hearing voice prompts after turning VoiceOver off?
Try restarting Apple TV:
- Unplug Apple TV from power
- Wait 30 seconds
- Plug it back in
- Allow 1–2 minutes to restart
This clears temporary software glitches.
Important: If the voice only happens inside one app
In rare cases, the issue may come from the app itself rather than Apple TV.
Try closing the app:
- Double press TV button
- Swipe to the app
- Swipe up to close it
Then reopen it.
If you are unsure whether it is VoiceOver
Please send support@marshmallowstreaming.com:
📩 A photo of the screen
📩 What exactly the voice is saying
📩 Whether it happens everywhere or only in one app
That helps us identify the issue quickly.
Helpful Tip
Because the Apple TV remote is very sensitive, accidental accessibility changes happen more often than people expect.
The good news: this is almost always solved in under a minute.
